NEW YORK – With the exhortation for further collaboration among the Hellenic-American professional organizations and the Community at all levels, the cutting of the traditional New Year’s Vasilopita was held on January 16 at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity’s Chiotes Hall in Manhattan.

His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America blessed and cut the Vasilopita, assisted by Consul General of Greece in New York Dinos Konstantinou and the heads of 16 professional associations, under the organizational supervision of the Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce (HACC).

HACC Executive Board Chairman Markos Drakotos serve Master of Ceremonies for the event, inviting the officials as well as the representatives of the organizations to share a short greeting. He himself shared his best wishes for the new year and referred to the symbolic meaning of the Vasilopita, which is “charity, humility, and integrity,” adding that “Saint Basil’s vision for humanity remains more relevant than ever.”

For his part, Consul General Dinos Konstantinou pointed out that “events like today’s, where 16 Hellenic-American organizations are represented, are the most important thing and show unity, like-mindedness, and togetherness.”

Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris said: “It is a great honor for us and our colleagues to be near you. We are happy when we take part in these events. I am impressed by this lovely gathering.”

Hellenic Medical Society of New York (HMSNY) President Dr. Antonios Gasparis commented on the great turnout of HMSNY members – despite the bitter cold that could be an inhibiting factor – and focused on the need to attract the youth.

“These professional organizations are the key to preserving Hellenism and staying united. We have to invest in the youth,” Dr. Gasparis noted.

Archbishop Elpidophoros pointed out that the cutting of the Vasilopita is an occasion for the community to be closer, adding that it emphasizes the equality and solidarity of all participants.

“The Vasilopita that we cut and share is equal to everyone and everyone is victorious and blessed. Everyone shares the same piece. This is the purpose of the Vasilopita, to bring us together, but also [to highlight] the unity of our people,” said His Eminence.

Clay Maitland (HACC), Demetrios Comodromos (Cyprus-U.S. Chamber of Commerce), Paulette Poulos (Leadership 100), Amy Kalogeropoulos (National Philoptochos), Theodore Klingos (AHEPA), and Kondilia Parissi (HABA) delivered a greeting on behalf of the co-organizing organizations.

Nicholas Kouridis (Hellenic-American Cultural Foundation), George Zapantis (Hellenic Lawyers Association), Kalliopi Ziangos (Hellenic Professional Women), John Stratakis (National Hellenic Society), Stella Kokolis (Federation of Greek-American Educators), Lou Katsos (EMBCA), Gina Valliadis (Hermes EXPO), Stelios Taketzis (on behalf of the Greek-American media) and Nancy Papaioannou (Alma Bank) also shared their greetings.

The Athenians’ Society of New York, Pan Gregorian Enterprises of Metro New York and Long Island, and the Greek young professionals organizations were also among the organizers of the event.

HACC Executive Director Alexandra Mitsakis was also thanked for all her efforts organizing the evening’s program.

Following the cutting of the Vasilopita, a musical program entertained all those present.
